ALEX FROM TOKYO / “TIMEWARP”― SUGGESTION OF THE REAL DANCE MUSIC
－ This means a lot. What do you think reflecting about this whole year?
ALEX 「It makes me think that we are doing the right thing. It is a party I really wanted to do in Japan. I started this residency last year, it has been fresh every time, lots of people starting to support us and the party is happening! Our relationship with Yellow and Ryo Watanabe play a big part. I am very happy, I am very thankful, and I will be very thankful for ever. In that sense, that may be why magic happened at the last party!
－ We are getting close to the idea we were talking about together at the very beginning of this project.
ALEX 「「Definitely. We have the party and 2 mix CDs now, we are going to an interesting direction」
－ We are every time getting great feedback from the mix CDs.
ALEX 「I have been recording live in one take the mix from my studio in NYC.The concept is to express a live feeling and to transmit the vibe of the party as a package. Every time, I give it to my DJ and artist friends they do love it. It makes me really happy! Another thing. We do give a great importance to visuals. We have been asking artists we love who understand our concept to do the design. We are very happy of the 2 CDs. For example, the artwork "001" from Code:C is very special for us because everything started with it. That's why we were really happy that he did a live painting session at the last party! Regarding Tomokazu Matsuyama, he did one of our Tokyo Black Star jacket for Innervisions and we really like him and trust him. Matzu and I do come from a similar environment and we have the same kind of way of thinking」
－ I am looking forward to our future releases. Apart from Timewarp, can you tell us about your other up coming releases and projects?
ALEX 「There is going to be a lot of things this year. This tour was also part of my new mix CD mi-mix (Ultra-Vybe) tour, and as Tokyo Black Star we are going to release a new EP and an album on Innervisions this fall. Especially regarding the album, it is something new for us, we have spent lots of time and worked a lot on it. The content of the album is very strong so please look forward to it! I will be touring the world as a DJ more than ever. A new club recently opened in NYC, Europe has been happening for me too. There have been new positive things coming up, the scene around us is happening and the motivation and the fun in DJing is higher」
－ Listening to you speaking, you must feel a lot of things regarding all the different club scenes.
ALEX 「A lot of good things and bad things. It is normal but you have different cultures and people according to countries. There are lots of different musical environments and customs. Every situation and depending on the area completely differ. That is why we can't explain the differences like this. What we can say for sure is that for a DJ the same thing can never happen again. I do try to keep challenging myself, and depending on the situation and the people around you at the party something different comes up to you. That is why it is great that some kind of "magic" can happen」
